CIWEM is a professional membership organisation, developing careers and competencies for environmental professionals, working towards a safer, more sustainable world. Our mission is to build a global community of water and environmental professionals dedicated to working for the public benefit.

Last year, CIWEM declared a climate and biodiversity emergency, pledging to help its 10,000 members to tackle climate change and to make our world more sustainable.  We produce a diverse programme of events, professional training, publications, awards and environmental policy work to support that mission.

We need an experienced, talented content writer and subeditor to introduce a digital-first strategy at CIWEM, creating and managing content on, to make it the go-to website for water and environmental management. The digital content editor we’re looking for will demonstrate:

  • Curiosity, enthusiasm, storytelling and writing flair
  • At least three years’ experience, with a portfolio of published stories, as a writer and/or editor
  • At least three years’ experience newsgathering, writing, editing and uploading stories
  • At least three years’ experience using named content-management systems
  • Multi-media writing skills, tailoring message to medium; news, features, newsletters, blogs
  • SEO skills, flair and strategy to track and build a lively social-media presence
  • Grace under pressure, delivering stylish, engaging, fact-checked copy to tight deadlines
  • People skills, to coax out stories, increasing and improving the team’s written output
  • All-round tech skills using content-management systems
  • Experience editing and proofreading third-party copy
  • Interest in the environment, climate change and sustainability


The right candidate will help to lead CIWEM’s digital storytelling and news content, to promote CIWEM to its target audiences and monitor the analytics to shape future website content. Day to day, you will:

  • Create an online editorial schedule; calling in, editing and uploading stories to fill it
  • Gather news stories to post online, in newsletters and in The Environment magazine
  • Introduce a news-led approach to and CIWEM newsletters and communications
  • Fill gaps in the online editorial schedule; write, upload and promote stories daily
  • Write copy with strong SEO and reader appeal, edited for accuracy and spelling and hyperlinked
  • Write CIWEM news stories for The Environment and proofread the magazine
  • Help to edit, upload and promote The Environment stories; scope to write for the title
  • Help to create new, CIWEM/The Environment-branded digital advertising vehicles
  • Monitor and share analytics to shape future content strategy to build engagement
  • Help CIWEM staff to write confidently, to house style, to expand in-house capacity
  • Produce newsletters to promote CIWEM to target audiences and drive traffic to
  • Lead a multi-media approach, tailoring CIWEM messages to different vehicles
  • Lead CIWEM’s PR strategy, writing press releases and managing our social media
  • Help to call in and edit paid-for content, such as business partners’ stories

This is a new position within CIWEM’s external affairs team; we are hoping the right candidate will start as soon as possible.

The position is a full-time role and normal working hours are 9.00am to 5.00pm from Monday to Friday (inclusive). You may need occasional flexibility to meet the needs of the of the organisation outside core working hours, to accommodate events, breaking news or travel .
