SALARY:  £32,234 - £37,890     Grade 8    POInts 28-34

An opportunity has arisen in the Economy, Culture and Regeneration Team for a Canal Co-ordinator. The Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal is a strategic asset which runs through the spine of Torfaen. The Council has a strategic vision to rejuvenate the canal as a vibrant leisure and ecological asset, with the medium-term aim of restoring the line of the canal to Cwmbran town centre. This job role will act as a coordinator, working with senior officers to produce the canal strategy, leading on community and stakeholder engagement and scoping funding applications, and ensuring that the maintenance, ecological management and community aspirations are all aligned to a single, strategic vision.

The successful candidate will:-

  • Be responsible for developing and maintaining constructive relationships with all stakeholders on the canal, including community groups, lease-holders, businesses and canal users.
  • Be responsible for establishing a programme of community engagement and activity, seeking funding to facilitate a range of community activities which raise the profile of the canal.
  • Seek out funding sources, and prepare funding applications, for community engagement activities, maintenance activities, canal improvements and skills interventions.
  • Work alongside Senior Leadership to produce a strategic framework for the canal.
  • Work with the Council’s Highways maintenance team to seek innovative ways of maintaining the canal asset and to facilitate contact between Council maintenance team and stakeholders in relation to maintenance priorities.
  • Work alongside officers from across the Council and with external stakeholders to produce an action plan and management plan for the canal that sets out short, medium & long-term objectives.
