The nation’s investment in flood and coastal defences has helped to protect properties and reduce the impacts of flooding on lives and livelihoods. Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2027, the government is investing a further £5.2 billion in reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Alongside the construction of hard flood defences, our programme will seek to incorporate natural flood management and climate change allowances into the design of our schemes as well as create habitats for wildlife.
Our Partnership and Strategic Overview (PSO) teams support the whole lifecycle of our flood and coastal risk management assets, working with communities, professional partners and other organisations to protect us all from flood risk. Whether you’re analysing data to inform plans or developing strategic approaches to protect people and property, your skills are vital for our future.
In this role, you’ll lead a team responsible for identifying, prioritising, assessing and delivering new or existing Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) projects. You’ll secure funding, maintain and enhance the PSO’s relationships with a range of strategic partners, and provide evidence-based, sustainable guidance on flood and coastal erosion risk management. With your can-do attitude, you'll be the go-to team for Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) advice – whether for government capital funding, planning-related risk assessments, permit issues, or maps and modelling.
To succeed, you’ll need to understand the key issues relating to long term, sustainable Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management and be adept at coaching and mentoring others. You must also be able to work with effectively with the community to put strategies and policy into action – on time, to budget and while showing political awareness and sensitivity.
Ideally, you’ll be working towards becoming a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) or an equivalent, relevant, professional body.
