Job Description

As a Lead Local Flood Authority, Southampton City Council has a responsibility towards the management of flood risk from surface water, groundwater and ordinary watercourses. With a number of projects underway to reduce flood risk, we are looking to recruit an experienced and dedicated individual to join the team as Senior Flood Risk and Drainage Officer.

The successful candidate will act as the Council’s lead professional and technical advisor on matters relating to surface water flood risk and sustainable drainage. This varied role will see you supporting the Flood Risk Management service with the development and delivery of various plans, strategies and policies to improve the understanding of surface water flood risk and to achieve multiple environmental benefits. 

You will be working with a variety of both internal and external stakeholders each with differing levels of technical understanding therefore good written and verbal communication skills are essential. You must have a good understanding of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 and requirements of the National Planning Policy Framework and be able to confidently lead discussions and negotiations to secure the best possible outcome.

You must be qualified to a postgraduate level (or equivalent) within an appropriate discipline including civil engineering and have experience of sustainable drainage design and assessment. Skills in Project Management and GIS are desirable.

Southampton City Council operates a flexible working policy to support work life balance, with a hybrid of office and remote working adopted by the Flood Risk Management Team. Please note that whilst remote working is possible, there will be times when you will be required to attend Southampton to carry out duties relating to the role.
