Role Purpose

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) owns and maintains over 4000 flood risk assets in Wales that include over 500km of flood defences. Maintaining these assets is essential to reduce the flood risk to people and property. To do this we have a dedicated team of engineers and operational staff in Wales who carry out this crucial area of Flood Risk Management work. We have an exciting opportunity to become Senior Engineer in the Integrated Engineering Team in South West Wales.

The position is predominately working with a small team of engineers and NRW operational workforce to ensure the asset maintenance programme is delivered year on year. A key element of your work will be ensuring all permissions have been granted and regular operational progress meetings are undertaken ensuring delivery of the programme. You will also be responsible for the asset management database (AMX) ensuring this is populated and updated to reflect condition of assets and delivery of the maintennace activities. As well as carrying out programmed maintenance you will also act as principal designer and/or project manager on small to medium scale flood asset engineering schemes and mentor staff during scheme development and construction. Other important elements to your role will be to ensure correct contract and budget management in accordance with NRW processes and regularly review contingency plans of critical flood risk assets.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Qualifications; Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent is desirable together with a NEBOSH construction certificate.  A HND/HNC in civils or equivalent is the minimum requirement, together with significant related experience. The candidate should also be working towards Chartered Engineer status or other appropriate professional designation. 
  • A broad knowledge of civil engineering design and construction practices together with a fundamental knowledge of channel hydraulics.  An ability to develop and apply innovative solutions to problems. 
  • In this role you will be expected to support H&S best practice by actively promoting awareness and ensuring the provision of safe working practices to comply with NRW policy and standards.  
  • Project Management; Prince2 practitioner qualification would be desirable. 
  • Competent surveying skills. AutoCAD skills. 
  • Participation in cross-team working and stakeholder engagement to establish partnerships in the delivery of NRW flood risk objectives is an essential component of the role. 
  • Participation in the NRW’s incident response duty roster. 
  • The ability to undertake the ‘Client and Designer Role to comply with CDM 2015.
  • Good ICT/GIS and organisation skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
