As a Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA), Somerset County Council are responsible for managing the risk of flooding from surface water, groundwater and ordinary watercourses.

Here's what you can expect to be doing

As a Senior Risk Advisor, you will work closely with the service manager to shape the strategic direction of flood and water management for the Council during a period of significant change.


  • Act as the Council’s lead professional and technical advisor on matters relating to surface water flood risk and sustainable drainage
  • Provide technical and professional leadership to the team, supporting on more complex issues.
  • Be instrumental on the review, then implementation of Somerset’s local flood risk management strategy
  • Lead and support work across a full spectrum of flood and water management issues and ensure that all procedural and legal requirements are met.
  • Prepare design briefs and supervise the work of consultants and contractors, as necessary.

A few things about you

You will be a good fit for this role if you:

  • Can co-ordinate and manage workloads and people, ensuring that your team carries out effective casework
  • Can use your written and verbal communication skills to work with internal and external stakeholders with different levels of technical understanding
  • Have a good understanding of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 and requirements of the National Planning Policy Framework
  • Are able to confidently lead discussions and negotiations to secure the best possible outcome
  • Have sound technical and/or practical knowledge of drainage systems, delivery of capital schemes and flood risk management.

You will need to be educated to degree level (or able to demonstrate equivalent and relevant experience in the industry) within an appropriate discipline and have experience of sustainable drainage design and assessment
