Role Purpose

The post holder will be responsible for Hydrometry and Telemetry installations and maintenance of hydrometric equipment and telemetry at selected NRW Reservoir sites to monitor and comply with provisions of the Reservoirs Act 1975.

NRW’s Reservoir Telemetry Project is currently set out in two phases with a requirement to install up to 24 sites across the area. The Project is currently funded for the next 12 months.

You will work within the existing Area Hydrometry and Telemetry Team and be supported to work with others as part of a team to support and assist in the delivery of integrated Hydrometry & Telemetry (H&T) services in Operations, maintaining the quality of NRW’s hydrometric data by applying appropriate measurement solutions and ensuring the Hydrometric network is operational.

You will have responsibility for general data acquisition, site maintenance, installation, calibration of hydrometric and telemetry instrumentation used to support the Hydrometric network and the Reservoir Telemetry Project specifically.

Working closely with others which will include other teams and Framework Contractors to ensure that the installations are appropriate and fit for purpose to meet the needs of the business in all cases.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Relevant qualifications – Educated to degree level or equivalent in a scientific or engineering subject. Experience in a similar job role would be beneficial.  


  • Have excellent communication skills, demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and be a strong team worker. 


  • A sound awareness and understanding of Health and Safety and relevant regulations. 


  • Understanding of Hydrometry and Telemetry work systems and how the team fits into the NRW’s approach to Water Management and Flood Risk applying the principles of Sustainable Management of Natural Resources.    


  • Good inter-personal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with all customers and clients. 


  • Demonstrate a flexible approach to work and be able to prioritise workload to fit the need of the team, working with others and alone to undertake tasks. 


  • The role will require regular travelling to and from sites within a defined area Must have full UK driving licence.


  • A basic knowledge of the British, European and International Standards relating to Hydrometry and its mechanisms, enabling NRW to deliver appropriate hydrometric data:


  • Project management experience. 


  • An awareness of Welsh culture, and a positive attitude to linguistic and cultural diversity.
