About the role

Do you have environmental science consultancy experience (or perhaps you come from a regulatory body, academic background or water company)? Can you work across multiple technical disciplines? The main focus of this role is the co-ordination of technical projects within the Environmental Assessment sector of the business, following the guidelines set out by our central Project Management Office. APEM is home to a large number of specialists, covering a diverse range of technical disciplines such as water quality, fisheries, hydromorphology, bathymetric survey, Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS), macrophytes etc, and we have a need for specialist integrators, that have the ability to coordinate projects. These will often be large, strategic-level projects that span multiple disciplines, and the role will entail coordinating and managing inputs from others, pulling overarching themes and arguments together, managing finances and project milestones and ensuring successful and high-quality delivery of report and data outputs. Example projects could include a HMWB investigation into a proposed change to a public water supply compensation release, a HRA to support a new pipeline project or a WFD assessment for a marine dredge. 

The role is more than a project manager, you will be a technical coordinator. You will have the ability to be the client interface communicating and coordinating across multiple disciplines, you will have a technical oversight of the project direction coordinating inputs from others (e.g. fisheries inputs, water quality inputs, hydrological flow change inputs etc) and be able to write and polish technical reports (including integrating technical inputs from others) such as Environmental Assessment chapters, research reports, Water Framework Directive assessment reports etc. The role will involve working across a range of sectors including water resources, infrastructure, development, and power, across the UK. Applicants with experience in assessment of the effects of developments on the water environment would be particularly welcome. We expect demonstrable experience of environmental assessment requirements across e.g. EIA, SEA, WFD assessments, HRA and/or HMWB assessments.

You will be a commercially minded individual with a proven track record in consultancy, tendering activity and complex environmental project delivery within a large organisation.

You will be encouraged to attend or present at conferences / events and undertake training to develop your skills, giving you the chance to influence how we best meet our client needs in a growing and ever-changing market.

About you

The successful candidate will work with a wide variety of environmental & engineering consultancies, government agencies and regulatory bodies as well as other external stakeholders. You will be highly motivated and proactive, with a desire to achieve excellence in delivery and in the quality of your outputs. 

We are looking for an individual with a strong team ethic who is keen to work with colleagues across a range of disciplines, including across APEM’s Physical Aquatic, Freshwater Biological and Marine divisions. You will be able to demonstrate a flair for drawing together inputs to construct compelling and rigorous assessments focussed on client’s needs. You will be driven by the requirements for sustainable development and the need for environmental protection and effective management.

You will have over 2 years of experience in a relevant role undertaking or contributing to environmental assessments, preferably within a consultancy setting (ideally water environment and/or cross disciplinary environmental assessments).

Able to demonstrate an excellent understanding of general, or specific environmental science subject areas and assessment, with relevant commercial awareness. The successful candidate would ideally have a detailed knowledge and understanding of policy/legislation relevant to environmental appraisals and its application for environmental assessments.

A high level of attention to detail, the ability to work to tight timeframes, good communication skills and the provision of specialist technical input are key aspects of the role.

Required skills:

You will ideally have the following experience:

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Environmental Science or related discipline
  • Understanding of relevant environmental legislation
  • Ability to organise and coordinate multifaceted environmental project plans
  • Coordination, completion and review of environmental impact assessments (including HRA, EIA, WFD assessment)
  • Excellent client engagement skills

In addition, you will have 

  • Excellent communication and reporting skills
  • Extensive use of Word and Excel

Proficiency in GIS software packages would be advantageous.
