Job Description

Senior Hydraulic Modeller

Any UK Location (Remote Working)

Weetwood is a specialist flood risk, drainage, and water management consultancy firm. We have an outstanding reputation, developed over 25 years providing best in class technical consultancy advice. We operate nationally adopting a predominantly home working model, and our staff are based in and around Leeds, Newcastle, Chester/Mold, South Wales and Belfast. We have a solid future workload and ambitious plans for growth.

The Role

We have an opportunity for a Senior Hydraulic Modeller to join our team and work on a range of UK development sector projects. We have a broad base of clients, including property developers and investors, renewable energy companies, industrial and leisure clients, house-builders, insurers, legal firms, planning consultants and architects, technical consultants and private clients. This is a permanent role.

The role will include:

  • Preparing fee proposals
  • Scoping technical work
  • Preparing channel survey specifications, and liaising with survey sub-contractors
  • Developing hydraulic models to assess baseline flood risk; this may include fluvial, tidal overtopping and/or breach analysis
  •  Reviewing and developing (where required) hydraulic models developed by others
  • Estimating model inflows using industry standard hydrological flood estimation methods
  • Undertaking site visits to ensure that a hydraulic model appropriately represents the key hydraulic characteristics of the site and locality
  • Using hydraulic models to develop and assess mitigation measures, and to assess post development flood risk
  • Engaging with statutory consultees to the planning application process
  • Preparing hydrological and hydraulic modelling reports
  • Liaising/meeting with clients
  • Working closely with colleagues, other consultants and clients
  •  Undertaking CPD to ensure that you remain at the forefront of relevant technical, environmental and social developments.

About You

You will have a minimum of 5 years’ hydraulic modelling experience in a similar role with a UK based consultancy firm, local authority or government agency. You will be hard-working, organised and motivated, and able to work independently as well as part of a team. You will enjoy analysing flood risk issues and developing practical measures to appropriately mitigate the risk, without increasing flood risk elsewhere.

Essential Criteria

  • Experienced user of the FloodModeller/Estry/Tuflow modelling packages
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering/Science, Geography (with a Physical base), or related discipline.
  • You will have experience of hydrological flood estimation methods (WINFAP and ReFH2)
  • Competent user of GIS.
  • You should have experience of developing others by providing technical guidance and training, or have a desire to do so, and to provide broader technical leadership to others in the team as part of the role.
  • You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • You may be based anywhere in the UK. Hybrid working is an option for a candidate based within a commutable distance of our office in Mold (North Wales). Elsewhere, there is an opportunity for using flexible office workspace.

Desirable Criteria

  • Post-graduate degree
  • Chartered Member of CIWEM or other relevant institution, or keen to work towards gaining chartership.
  • Full UK driving license
