Job Description

If so, we have an exciting opportunity to join Southampton City Council on a permanent and full-time basis as a Flood Risk Management Officer.

Based within the Highways and Infrastructure Team you will play an important part of helping fulfil a range of statutory duties and functions assigned to Lead Local Flood Authorities under the Flood and Water Management Act 2010.

You will be act as a lead professional and technical advisor on matters relating to flood and coastal risk management. This includes working collaboratively with other internal departments to encourage uptake of blue and green infrastructure, as well as external partners to achieve the best possible flood management outcomes for the city.

Your work will be variable and include:

  • Developing plans and strategies to manage flood risk from all sources in Southampton,
  • Investigation of flood incidents,
  • Technical assessment of planning and development applications, including sustainable drainage.
  • Consenting and enforcement for ordinary watercourses, and
  • Development and delivery of works including major flood defence infrastructure to smaller sustainable drainage and green infrastructure solutions.

You should have a degree in a relevant subject, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and a good knowledge of flood risk management techniques. As the role is part of a small team, the ability to work independently and to set milestones is essential.

Southampton City Council operates a flexible working policy to support work life balance, with a hybrid of office and remote working adopted by the Flood Risk Management Team. Please note that whilst remote working is possible, there will be times when you will be required to attend Southampton to carry out duties relating to the role, sometimes at short notice.
