Job Description

Senior Environmental Scientist (Two years, fixed term)

£38,000 + car cash allowance

Based in Wigan, Stoke-on-Trent, or Ellesmere Port

(Role travel means valid driving license is essential)

About the role

At the Canal & River Trust, we believe life’s better by water, and that the waterways we take care of have a vital contribution to make to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies.

In turn, we have to make sure that we maintain a healthy natural environment for the waterways themselves, from water quality management to sediment sampling to ensuring every river and canal’s management is in line with environmental legislation. All that needs the support of a pro-active, experienced professional – and that’s where you’ll join us as a Senior Environmental Scientist.

About you

Naturally, we need someone with a strong grounding in protecting nature on behalf of organisations like ours. You’re a chartered professional with a relevant degree, and you’re deeply experienced when it comes to environmental protection and management. You know what’s best practice; you’re well-versed in environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks; and you know how to apply your breadth of knowledge in a business context, creating strategy that drives us forward.

But it’s about more than just your specialist technical knowledge: you’ve also got to be the kind of person who drives co-operation and communication across the business. You’re ready to share your advice and support wherever you’re needed, whether it’s offering sound judgement on environmental incidents; consulting on waste management issues; or contributing to the organisation’s dredging programme and environmental management systems. You’re motivated to work together with others, both internally and externally, to get the right result for our Trust – and in doing so, you’ll protect the health and beauty of waterways all over the country.

About us

We’re the charity who look after and bring to life 2000 miles of canals and rivers. Our waterways contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways are on the doorstep of 8 million people and reach some of the most deprived communities within the UK. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the wellbeing of our nation. Come and be part of it.

To apply

We aim to represent the diverse communities we are part of and welcome applicants from across all sectors of the community. We strongly believe that a diverse workforce brings with it a diversity of ideas, thinking and ways of working which enhances what we do.  Many of our vacancies can be considered for people who wish to work flexibly, job share or part time.
