About the role:

Horsham District Council is looking for a Drainage Officer to assist with the challenges posed from increased flooding due to climate change. Based in the recently formed Sustainability and Greenspaces department, the post holder will work alongside the Parks and Countryside team undertaking regular inspections of watercourses on Council owned land and specifying remedial measures where there are drainage issues. The role will involve ensuring that the Council fulfils its duties in relation to Warnham Mill Reservoir, which is an important site for nature conservation and requires careful long-term management. A major part of the role is to provide technical drainage advice on planning applications to ensure that development that takes place is built to high environmental standards.

This is a career graded post, and the Council is looking to appoint to the role at the level appropriate to the successful candidate’s experience, knowledge, and qualifications. The Council will support the post-holder to undertake further training and qualifications so that they are able to fulfil all of these responsibilities. You will be expected to work towards becoming a Chartered Member of the Institute of Water and Environmental Management.

About you:

To succeed as a Drainage Officer, you will have some knowledge of drainage and flood risk, backed by a degree in a related subject and some technical knowledge of non-engineering solutions to drainage and flooding issues, such as Natural Flood Management and Sustainable Urban Drainage. If you are appointed at the lower end of the career grade you will thrive on the challenge of developing your skills and knowledge, to enable you to become the go-to person for providing technical advice on flooding issues. You will have good communication skills, being able to explain complex issues to a wide range of audiences, as well as building positive relationships with partners within and external to the Council. You will also need to be well organised to manage a number of different projects. The role requires a full driver’s licence and access to a vehicle.

For an informal discussion about this role please call either Helen Peacock, Head of Sustainability and Greenspaces (01403 215513) or Catherine Howe Head of Strategic Planning on 01403 215505.
